Geography

🌍 Geography at Friday Bridge

At Friday Bridge, geography is more than maps and places—it’s about understanding the world and our place within it. Through the CUSP Geography Curriculum, pupils explore the relationships between people, places, and environments, developing a deep and connected understanding of the world around them.

Our curriculum is built on evidence-led principles and designed to help children think, work, and communicate like geographers. With a strong focus on both substantive knowledge (what we know) and disciplinary knowledge (how we think), pupils are empowered to ask big questions, explore diverse cultures, and understand the impact of human and physical processes on our planet.

🧭 What Makes Our Geography Curriculum Impactful?

  • Cumulative and Connected Learning: Key concepts such as place, space, scale, interdependence, and sustainability are revisited and deepened across year groups.
  • Thinking Like a Geographer: Pupils develop enquiry skills, use maps and fieldwork, and explore real-world issues such as climate change, migration, and global trade.
  • Mixed-Age Friendly: Our curriculum is carefully structured to support mixed-age classes, with dual knowledge notes and flexible planning that ensures every child is challenged and supported.
  • Vocabulary-Rich: We explicitly teach both everyday and subject-specific vocabulary, helping pupils articulate their understanding with clarity and confidence.
  • Fieldwork and Real-World Application: From local area studies to global comparisons, pupils engage in meaningful fieldwork and map-based investigations.

πŸ—ΊοΈ A Journey Through the World

From exploring the UK’s rivers and cities to comparing life in Nairobi or the Amazon rainforest, our pupils develop a rich understanding of:

  • Locational Knowledge: Where places are and how they connect
  • Place Knowledge: What places are like and how they differ
  • Human and Physical Geography: How people and nature shape the world
  • Geographical Skills and Fieldwork: How to observe, record, and analyse the world around us

πŸ—£οΈ Talking Geography

We place a strong emphasis on oracy and vocabulary. Pupils are taught to use geographical language meaningfully, enabling them to explain their thinking, evaluate evidence, and reflect on their learning.

At Friday Bridge, we intend for geography teaching that inspires curiosity, builds global awareness, and empowers pupils to become thoughtful, informed citizens of the world.
