Design and Technology
🛠️ Design & Technology at Friday Bridge
At Friday Bridge, we use the CUSP Design and Technology Curriculum, where pupils are empowered to become innovative thinkers, problem-solvers, and confident makers.
Our curriculum is built on evidence-led principles and designed to ensure that every child learns to think, work, and communicate like a designer. With a strong focus on practical skills, technical knowledge, and creative exploration, pupils engage in a wide range of disciplines including:
- Mechanisms and Structures
- Food and Nutrition
- Textiles and Materials
- Systems and Electrical Systems
Each discipline is revisited throughout the primary years, allowing pupils to build on prior learning and develop increasing confidence and complexity in their design thinking.
🧠 What Makes Our DT Curriculum Impactful?
- Vertical Progression: Skills and knowledge are carefully sequenced to ensure pupils revisit and deepen their understanding over time.
- Working as a Designer: Pupils learn to design, make, evaluate, and apply their ideas with purpose and precision.
- Knowledge-Rich and Skills-Focused: Each unit includes core knowledge, technical vocabulary, and hands-on activities that bring learning to life.
- Real-World Relevance: Pupils explore the work of real designers and technologists, drawing inspiration from their innovations and applying it to their own creations.
- Inclusive and Adaptive: The curriculum is designed to be accessible to all learners, with thoughtful adjustments to support pupils with SEND.
🗣️ Talking Like a Designer
Oracy and vocabulary development are central to our approach. Pupils are taught to use the language of design and technology meaningfully—explaining their ideas, evaluating their work, and reflecting on their learning with confidence.
🍽️ From Circuits to Cooking
Whether designing a moving toy, constructing a bridge, programming a system, or preparing a nutritious meal, our pupils experience the full breadth of design and technology. They learn to:
- Solve real-world problems creatively
- Work with a range of tools and materials
- Understand the importance of function, form, and safety
- Reflect on and improve their designs
At Friday Bridge we want to ensure we are laying strong foundations for our future designers, engineers, and creators of tomorrow.
