Hawks
Science in the sunshine
Tue 22 March 2022

Hawks applied their knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to work as a group to separate a mixture. They used their knowledge of filtration to separate the insoluble materials from the liquid. However they were left with a solution. Next week we are going to learn how to separate the salt from the water.

Preparing to write a biography
Tue 16 November 2021

In our English lessons, we are learning to write biographies. This week Hawks have been working hard to collect lots of fascinating facts and information about Neil Armstrong.
Remembrance Day
Thu 11 November 2021

In Hawks we looked at the lives of War Poets who served during WW1. We used this time to reflect and remember those who gave their life for their country.
Maths
Thu 14 October 2021

The children in Hawks have been working extremely hard in their maths lessons. This week we have been exploring addition and subtraction. Here we are using the counters to demonstrate exchanging.

Dear parents,
Well, we made it through a term and what a term it has been! Everyone has been successful and has made progress and our love for learning has been well and truly reignited! Above all, we have had time back together, to rekindle and secure important childhood friendships.
P.S.H.E (personal, social and health education) has, rightly so following the pandemic, taken a priority this term. We have had daily opportunities to share our thoughts, feelings and worries about what has happened and about the future. We have talked about and practised different ways to support our physical and mental health. We have looked into the importance of sleep; at ways of reducing stress through exercise, breathing techniques and other self-care habits. We have thought about diet and the direct impact healthy and unhealthy foods can have on our physical and mental health. We have deepened our understanding of what it means to be human and how, as humans, spending time with others is healing, comforting and paramount to our well-being. We definitely feel a lot happier, more confident and ready to tackle the next steps of our educational journey!
English has been really interesting as it has been taught largely through topic (WW2). Listening to and analysing the dynamic, persuasive and inspiring speeches of the late, great Winston Churchill, we have developed our understanding of the features of persuasive language (rhetoric, repetition, inclusive pronouns, powerful vocabulary) and, through writing our own wartime speeches, we have applied the features of this genre as well as our ability to write using different sentence structures. We have a good understanding of simple, compound and complex sentences and can write using a variety of these, understanding that this enables us to manipulate our writing to maximise the interest of the reader.
Maths has been challenging. As a class, this is one of our favourite lessons and we have risen to the challenge of calculating using all four operations and solving problems by reading, understanding and selecting the right calculations to solve these problems. We have continued to work with fractions and have begun to find percentages of amounts. Our understanding of shape, space and measure has deepened and we can name and describe the properties of 2D and 3D shapes; find missing interior angles of triangles; identify obtuse, acute, reflex and right angles and measure them. Daily fluency has ensured repetition and speed in the basics and our continuing work on times tables has supported all areas of our learning in maths.
WW2 is arguably the most exciting topic on the curriculum. This term, we have found out about leading historical figures such as Hitler and Winston Churchill, about their lives and the roles they played throughout and at the ending of the war. We looked at the everyday lives of British civilians who lived in fear of the Luftwaffe, listening out for the sirens that meant they had to run and hide from the bombs in the nearest Anderson or underground shelters; who learnt to ‘dig for Victory’ and ‘make do and mend’ and stretch their meagre rations to survive. We found out about the even harder lives of the millions of soldiers who lived in the muddy trenches eating ‘bully beef’ and biscuits; suffering from trench foot and never knowing when it would be their turn to go over the embankment onto ‘no-man’s’ land. We then learnt about V.E day and are looking forward to holding our own V.E. day celebrations on the penultimate day of term.
Continuing the theme of WW2, in design technology, we made the popular ‘bread and butter’ pudding. We made and tried the traditional version with milk and currants; a luxurious version made with chocolate and cream and a healthy version made with coconut milk, fresh fruit and brown bread. We designed our own and evaluated the end products. It was tasty work!
In science, linking again to the idea of ‘grow your own’ in WW2, we thought about why people were generally healthier then, at the importance of fruit and vegetables, keeping active and not eating too much. We learnt about the different food types and how the body digests and extracts what it needs to stay strong and healthy. We designed and made our own fruit and vegetable smoothies and evaluated and categorised foods that promote health and foods that do the opposite.
P.E. has continued with P.O.S.H every week and it has been so good to have some warmer weather and make the most of the field next to the classroom. In music, we have been practising for our production with Karl and this is another event that we are anticipating with excitement. We have continued to learn Spanish and are beginning to have simple conversations and embed the basics (numbers, colours, foods, greetings and so on). We really enjoy Spanish and know that it will give us a grounding should we choose to do this at G.C.S.E.
This term has indeed been bright, busy and brilliant! Everyday has provided us with opportunities to reconnect, learn and progress. We are all happier and more confident and ready to go forward whatever the future brings next!
Well done Hawks!
We hope you have enjoyed this term as much as we have! Have a great summer holiday! Year 5, we look forward to seeing you as our new year 6, refreshed and raring to go in September! Year 6, thank you for all the joy you have given us over the years. We wish you the very best at secondary school and hope that all of your dreams, however big, however small, come true!
Miss. Fitzpatrick and Miss. Brown.

Hawks - Science Week April 2021
Wed 21 April 2021
Science Week in Hawks
During Science Week Hawks became forensic scientists examining the evidence left at the crime scene in their classroom! Six suspects were identified and, through conducting scientific investigations, Hawks eliminated the suspects one by one until they were left with the guilty party. A court case was then held where the Hawks had to present all their scientific evidence.
Throughout our scientific enquiry we learnt about the properties of materials and conducted many experiments to investigate these properties such as the absorbency, acidity and conductivity of a material.
We also learnt how to write up our science experiments including how to write a hypothesis, report results and draw conclusions.
It was a super science week!
