History
🏛️ History at Friday Bridge
At Friday Bridge, history is brought to life through stories of people, places, and events that have shaped our world. Using the CUSP History Curriculum, we guide pupils on a rich and coherent journey through time—helping them understand not just what happened, but why it matters.
Our curriculum is built on evidence-led principles and designed to help children think, work, and communicate like historians. With a strong focus on both substantive knowledge (what we know about the past) and disciplinary knowledge (how we investigate and interpret it), pupils develop a deep understanding of the past and its relevance to the present.
🧠 What Makes Our History Curriculum Impactful?
- Chronological Coherence: Pupils build a secure mental timeline, revisiting key concepts such as community, power, invasion, and democracy across different periods and civilisations.
- Thinking Like a Historian: Children explore cause and consequence, change and continuity, evidence, and significance through structured enquiry and rich historical sources.
- Mixed-Age Friendly: Our curriculum is carefully designed to support mixed-age classes, with dual knowledge notes and flexible planning that ensures all pupils are challenged and supported.
- Vocabulary-Rich: We explicitly teach historical vocabulary, helping pupils articulate their understanding with clarity and confidence.
- Inclusive and Diverse: From the Windrush generation to Ancient Benin, our curriculum reflects a wide range of voices, cultures, and perspectives.
🕰️ A Journey Through Time
From the Great Fire of London to Ancient Greece, from the Stone Age to the Space Race, our pupils explore:
- Significant people and events in British and world history
- Ancient civilisations such as Egypt, the Maya, and the Shang Dynasty
- Themes of power, democracy, and community across time
- Local history and how global events shaped our own communities
🗣️ Talking History
We place a strong emphasis on oracy and vocabulary. Pupils are taught to use historical language meaningfully, enabling them to explain their thinking, evaluate evidence, and reflect on the past with insight and empathy.
