➕ Maths at Friday Bridge

At Friday Bridge, we believe that every child can be a confident and capable mathematician. We follow the White Rose Maths scheme, which provides a carefully sequenced, mastery-based curriculum from Early Years through to Year 6. Our approach focuses on developing fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving—the essential building blocks for mathematical success.

From our youngest learners to our Year 6 pupils, we ensure that all children build a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, supported by practical resources, visual representations, and rich mathematical language.

🧠 What Makes Our Maths Curriculum Impactful?

  • Mastery Approach: Concepts are taught in small, connected steps to ensure deep understanding and long-term retention.
  • Fluency First: Pupils develop strong number sense and mental strategies to support efficient calculation.
  • Reasoning and Problem-Solving: Children are encouraged to explain their thinking, make connections, and tackle challenges with confidence.
  • Progressive and Consistent: Our curriculum builds year on year, ensuring that children revisit and deepen their understanding over time.
  • Clear Calculation Policies: We use consistent methods across the school, which you can explore further down this page.

📚 What Will My Child Learn?

Key Stage 1
Children develop confidence and fluency with whole numbers, counting, and place value. They explore the four operations using practical resources and begin to describe and compare shapes, measures, and quantities. By the end of Year 2, pupils will know number bonds to 20 and have a secure understanding of place value.

Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3–4)
Pupils become increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the four operations, including written and mental methods. They begin to solve problems involving fractions and decimals, develop reasoning about shape and space, and use measuring instruments with accuracy. By the end of Year 4, children will know all multiplication tables up to 12×12.

Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5–6)
Children extend their understanding of number and place value to include larger integers and more complex calculations. They explore fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, and algebra. Geometry and measures are taught in greater depth, and pupils learn to classify shapes and use precise mathematical vocabulary. By the end of Year 6, pupils are fluent in all four operations and ready for the challenges of secondary maths.

At Friday Bridge, maths is more than numbers—it’s about thinking logically, solving problems, and seeing patterns in the world around us. With White Rose Maths, we’re building confident, curious mathematicians who are ready for whatever comes next.
